As I talk to boys in the course of my work (I am a psychologist), I find that very few Troops do active recruiting in the schools the way that the Cub Scout packs do. It seems that a lot of Troops just rely on the Cub Scouts to funnel kids through to them. There are a lot of boys out there who missed the boat for Cubs (family reasons, moving, transportation, money, whatever) who may be interested in Boy Scouts (a FAR cooler program, just because the kids are old enough for it to be allowed to be cooler) but don't know that we are out there. Hitting the middle schools and junior high schools with recruiting events and booths at school activities is at least worth a look. It is a good enough program that letting kids know what it is and the fact that it it there can be really helpful.
